ABSTRACT

This chapter looks into Africa’s coaching and coach development landscape. After a brief overview of the history of sports and coaching in Africa since the colonial era, the chapter describes the coach education and development initiatives in Africa, particularly in Southern Africa, that were prompted by the International Council for Coaching Excellence. The primary focus is on South Africa, which was among the first few nations to implement its own coaching framework and coach developers’ programmes. It is also among the few countries in Africa where coaching and coach development publications are available, and its higher education institutions offer degrees in sports coaching. The South African experience suggests that sports coaching degrees provided by higher education institutions and collaborative research initiatives across African nations can serve as a vital element of the advancement and development of coach education programmes in Africa.
