ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides answer some of these questions from inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives across the Global North and South. It provides readers with a guide to navigate the conceptualization of law and its sources, such as water and land. The book explores the role of water and language in the worldview of Anishinaabeg peoples and seeks to shift how people think about relationships to law and knowledge. It considers the meaning and power of recognition of sovereignty, independence and self-determination, and recognition of peoples. The book offers a cross-cutting comparison that thematically continues with building and rebuilding relationships across the Global North and South. It demonstrates how the desire to decolonize law must address both knowledge production and formal legal systems in order to break the loop between these of society that construct and hold colonialism in place.
