ABSTRACT

Although Belle Moskowitz’s legacy is missing in public relations history, she was a social worker, educator, reformer, and political strategist. Her career began by advocating for safe housing and conditions for workers, immigrant girls, and others. Unions, Democratic leaders, politicians, and others recognized her skills in mediation and catalysing reforms. As a young widow and mother, she propelled Al Smith into the limelight by running his national presidential campaign. When U.S. immigration quotas banned persecuted refugees, and segregation stopped people of colour from political participation, Belle Moskowitz intervened on their behalf. Her contributions to public relations forged a path for women for decades to come.
