ABSTRACT

Both in Chinese linguistics and L2 Chinese pedagogy, V(erb) N(oun) combinations (or líhící) have received much attention and long been considered as a homogeneous category in terms of separability. However, a closer look at the linguistic facts shows that there is a gradation of such a quality among the members of líhécí. To offer a better account of líhící for L2 Chinese pedagogy, this chapter proposes a word-phrase continuum of líhící, which takes into account the systemic variations of lexical and grammatical properties of different líhécí from a usage-based perspective and discusses its pedagogical implications. 1
