ABSTRACT

In recent years, a new curriculum has been introduced across Scotland which includes some Einsteinian physics. The Curriculum for Excellence reforms in Scotland resulted in a new curriculum for school pupils aged 3 to 18 years. Many of the physics teachers in Scotland have degrees, such as in engineering, which did not include the study of relativity, or studied it some time ago, or lack the Pedagogical Content Knowledge required to teach these topics at school level well. There is evidence that most of the formally organized professional learning activities arranged by schools and local authorities for teachers in Scotland are not effective. It is essential to maximize the quality of professional learning support for teachers and to try and do as much as possible in the limited time available. The introduction of general relativity into the Scottish curriculum has been in the most advanced part of the curriculum with a relatively expert physics teaching workforce.
