ABSTRACT

There are mixed views regarding the relationship between tourism and peace. It is perceived by some researchers that tourism is a force for creating peace and by others that peace is a mechanism to generate tourism. This chapter seeks to re-examine the relationship between tourism and peace from a deductive reasoning approach. To provide a broader understanding of both concepts, the chapter analyzes the model of peace tourism as well as the contribution of both tourism and peace to sustainable development. The deduction is that tourism, being a global activity, can generate peace and peace is a catalyst for tourism and its development. Both tourism and peace play vital roles in the global mission of sustainable development. In employing the social network theory to explain the relationship between tourism and peace, the chapter proposes tourism nodes and tourism ties that are critical in tourism networks to attain peace and for peace to generate tourism. The study will be of importance to tourism stakeholders and scholars.
