ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the relationship between tourism and its human side: sociology, psychology, and social psychology that are fundamentally interrelated, to shed light on some overlooked characteristics of tourism in conceptual and practical terms. Although the relationship between tourism and social psychology is meaningful, it has not been focused on sufficiently in tourism research to reflect its significance. This chapter sets the historical context of travel and tourism before examines the importance of the relationship between tourism and sociology, psychology, and social psychology. The psychological and sociological foundations of tourism and its inseparable connection with social psychology are emphasized, and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the tourism phenomenon, enabling to see beyond the oversize hats, photographs taken, number of international arrivals, and tourism revenues, the necessity of considering the foundations together with the social-psychological perspective is underlined.
