ABSTRACT

Unfortunately, tourism-related scholars have not paid attention to the problem of racism in tourism and hospitality. In fact, they strongly believe tourism promotes peace and political stability reducing the possibilities of inter-ethnic or inter-class conflicts. In this chapter, we have shown precisely the opposite. Prejudice and racism take a hidden form in service sectors where the hosts are subordinated to guest’s desires. The classic racism, which was based on so-called biological differences, set the pace to a subtle cultural racism camouflaged of cultural diversity. In view of this, the present chapter puts the contributions of Gordon Allport and the social contact theory to the forefront while laying the foundations towards a new radical understanding of racism as well as the hostilities to foreign tourists.
