ABSTRACT

With the advent of digital technology and proliferation of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, which allow us to watch and record videos on the go, the audio-visual media have become central to the way we communicate, learn, and work. Indeed, cineliteracy has become an essential part of a wider literacy for the 21st century. As a result, the educational use of film has increased greatly in recent years. Apart from exposure to authentic language and increased motivation and willingness to perform in- and out-of-class activities, building a strong pedagogy around video materials has added advantages of greater inclusiveness and more opportunities to practise speech reading skills in the target foreign language. This chapter presents several adaptable ideas on how to integrate both pre-existing and teacher-generated video content into a general EFL course for DHH foreign language learners.
