ABSTRACT

Digital education has assumed a whole new importance since the 2020 Covid crisis. What directions future ed tech will take are unclear, but psychology teachers can future proof their practice by being able to use digital tools and techniques to support conventional classroom teaching and to deliver courses on-line – in part or whole. This requires mastery of synchronous and asynchronous technology. Most importantly, teachers need to be able to apply principles of effective learning to digital practice. Students should thus be active, interactive, salient, memorable and personalised. Cognitive load theory has proved particularly informative in designing activities that conform to these principles. Teachers also need to be aware of legal issues around data protection, accessibility and copyright. There are decisions to be made at the organisational level about choices of digital platform; I advocate maintaining both a VLE like Moodle and an Office suite such as Google and Microsoft provide, and integrating the two for maximum convenience, choice and functionality.
