ABSTRACT

Research on teacher subject knowledge has shown that teachers need not only knowledge and understanding of the subject they teach, but also how to teach it (Ofsted 2019). This chapter focuses on the importance of using the science of learning in teaching your students. An appreciation of how to manage the cognitive load of students will help them to access the topics and threshold concepts that underpin psychology. Additionally, in order to maximise long term retention of knowledge, we explore how to implement dual coding, spaced practice and the use of retrieval practice to improve students’ memory of what they have been taught. All of these strategies will promote higher level thinking in your students as they encourage them to actively think about psychology in new and productive ways.
