ABSTRACT

This chapter examines research about the role of psychological literacy in the classroom and how to embed it into lessons. When studying psychology, students develop certain skills and values and it is the use of these in their studies and wider lives that is discussed. There is a focus on pedagogical matters such as seeing students as science practitioners to encourage ‘thinking like a psychologist’. Also deliberated are innovative assessment techniques that are founded in psychological research to enable the student teacher to develop their own skills. Suggestions are given for how to effectively utilise students within the classroom through peer-assisted learning. Finally, the development of ‘soft skills’ necessary for employability are highlighted and work volunteering discussed to aid students with future career choices.
