ABSTRACT

A burgeoning field of feminist scholarship has substantially grown our knowledge of the myriad ways in which technologies are being utilised in sexual violence, harassment, and abuse of adults. Increasingly of concern are behaviours such as non-consensual sexting, image-based sexual abuse (known colloquially as “revenge porn”), unsolicited sexual imagery (commonly “dick pics”), digital sexual harassment, as well as dating apps or other technologies used to enable contact sexual offences, to name a few. This chapter provides an overview of the conceptualisation of technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV) as well as the current state of research into its extent and nature. In particular, debates and recent conceptual developments within feminist criminologies are reflected upon in order to inform further concept development and future research directions. Ultimately, the chapter argues that though the elucidation of TFSV has been vital for scholarship as well as legal and policy development, the concept will eventually expire in its utility as research, law, and policy more fully grasp the embedded nature of technology in everyday harm.
