ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores how the ‘social’ and ‘more-than-social’ are constituted through sonic relation and participation, and how ethics and aesthetics manifest in and through these assemblies. It presents a personal reflection and case study approach to three media walks delivered in Greece, presenting insights into their ethics and aesthetics, with a particular focus on some of the dynamics of participation. Woven throughout the text are questions and reflections about media walks, sound walks, technology, and how these can create, illuminate, and hide community. The book develops the idea of an ‘acoustic common’ through his practice as a sound artist in various cities around the world. It also explores the aesthetics of sonic experimentation in participatory art and culture. The book suggests that the works withdraw the usual frames for aesthetic judgement by engaging participants in the process of creation.
