ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents the work of The Verbatim Formula, a performance collective who have developed verbatim theatre approaches to amplify the experiences and stories of care-experienced young people. It explores the role of podcasting in creating counter-narratives about Roma communities. The book also presents a narrative ‘critical self-reflection’, which highlights the author’s own process of discovery creating a collaborative multimedia work incorporating sound art and orchestral composition with refugee youth. It focuses on Odyssey on the Airwaves, a project facilitated by the authors with men incarcerated in a UK prison during COVID-19 lockdown. The book offer a meta-narrative account of how the project unfolded in Odyssean terms, and aims to counter the traditional hierarchical ‘praxis of judgement’ held by both facilitators and participants by deploying Deleuzian ‘affective encounters’.
