ABSTRACT

By tracking eye movement and monitoring galvanic skin response we have direct access to the autonomic nervous system. This biometric monitoring records our unconscious responses to environmental stimuli providing clues to our processing priorities and evolutionary heritage. Streetscape studies conducted in Amsterdam and Boston confirm that we are concerned with other people and with automobiles, both of which can represent potential threats. We also look down at where we are walking, not up at buildings. The potential of this method of monitoring for improving our civic environment is just beginning to become clear. An extensive appendix describes the methodology and provides relevant data.
