ABSTRACT

Building codes have evolved in response to specific threats in order to create minimum standards for health, safety and welfare. The profession of architecture has the responsibility for code compliance, but is only marginally involved in shaping code content. With the need to adapt swiftly to the challenges of climate change and to minimize carbon contributions from the built environment the AIA has issued a White Paper setting out a timeline and goals to increase architect participation in code development and ultimately to make codes performance-based, with mandatory post-occupancy evaluation.
