ABSTRACT
This short essay explores the joint development in human evolution of the city and the countryside, questioning the urban/rural dichotomy and encouraging an all-at-once landscape view of both as interdependent forms of human habitat. Shifting baseline syndrome, however, colours how humans view their past relationship with landscapes and thus it is important to maintain perspective so that activism’s goals are not progressively diminished.
