ABSTRACT

As many attempts to mitigate architecture's impact on the changing climate have failed, it becomes more important to develop alternative approaches to sustainability. For raumlabor, sustainability is an inbuilt conviction, rooting back to the green movement in Germany in the late 1970s and is intuitively applied in its projects through reuse and recycling as the team seeks to work with materials that tell a story. By rethinking the architect's role, it may become possible to understand the effects and limitations of design, and discover new ways to tackle the issues of this century. In general, the group regards teaching architecture as an opportunity to share its alternative way of working and values among students. Ecological sustainability can be achieved through considering local conditions, integrating environmental issues from the start and developing design strategies that build around these topics as opposed to retrofitting costly gadgetry in order to reach energy regulations last minute.
