ABSTRACT

Historical reenactment in Poland has been developing for over 40 years, since the first medieval “tournaments” in Golub-Dobrzyń in late 1970s. The last several years have been the time of its dynamic development. It is believed to have a positive impact on the historical knowledge of young people, given new life to almost vanished professions such as blacksmithing and traditional tailoring, and has created a popular martial arts sport (e.g. fights in armor). This chapter presents the development of the historical reenactment movement in Poland and discusses its potential, as well as the possible drawbacks and criticism it evokes.
