ABSTRACT

This chapter considers youth in endangered language research from a global perspective. Beginning with an examination of how youth have been positioned in research on language endangerment over time, it illustrates how the agency of youth in language endangerment and reclamation processes has been increasingly recognized. It reviews the methods that have been used in this area, including ethnography, participatory action research and arts-based methods. Turning to recent research in Latin America, it presents findings on youth as (often struggling) learners and emergent speakers of endangered languages, and on youth as (often successful) creators and trend-setters in language, art and social interaction. Finally, this chapter concludes with a summary of recommendations for researchers, educators and youth activists who aim to support and promote endangered languages.
