ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the history of indecency and obscenity in the United States, including its regulation at the local, state and federal levels. This chapter also examines how such retrictions have evolved with changing mores and new technologies, including broadcasting, cable, satellite, computers, the Internet and streaming. Major court decisions are analyzed, including those of the U.S. Supreme Court. Specific areas discussed include child pornography, indecency and the arts, and ethical dilemmas facing the news media in covering obscenity and indecency cases.
