ABSTRACT

Xwi7xwa Library is the only Indigenous-focused academic branch library at a university in Canada. Its collections, programs, and services support the Indigenous programs and courses at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Xwi7xwa's Indigenous and non-Indigenous employees and students develop and practice Indigenous librarianship, which unites the discipline of librarianship with Indigenous approaches to knowledge, theory, and research methodologies.

A primary goal of Xwi7xwa's LibGuides is to place Indigenous Knowledges, perspectives, and pedagogy at the forefront of an information-seeking researcher. Using the framing of the Longhouse teachings: respect, relationships, reverence, responsibility, and relevance, these LibGuides act as more than a reference resource, but also as an outreach platform and means of sharing social justice information. This chapter aims to inspire other Black, Indigenous, People(s) of Color (BIPOC) librarians to use LibGuides as a tool of social justice in a way that aligns with their own unique worldview. It also aims to inform on how Indigenous Knowledges and foundations have informed the creation of our LibGuides and have uplifted our voices as Indigenous librarians.
