ABSTRACT

Driven by profit motives, the imperative of endless growth, and the impulse to colonize Earth and territories through war, capitalism has been proved to be ecologically destructive. By means of science and technology, transnational conglomerates extract natural and human resources from all around the world, dump toxic waste in the peripherals, and erode local community and eco-diversity. This worldwide “ecological rift” (Marx) manifests itself in the alienation of nature and of humans, a prominent theme in recent Chinese SF fiction. Chinese SF writers probe into and critique ecological destructions and environmental degradation as a result of global capitalist expansion. Increasingly recognized as part of a worldwide concerns with environmental crises through abuses of intrusive technologies like AI, genetic engineering, and biochemistry, Chinese SF addresses ecological degradation and the existential threat to humanity. This chapter will examine how Chen Qiufan, Liu Cixin, and Hao Jingfang address ecological crises in the alienation of nature and humans and contribute to the global ecological concern.
