ABSTRACT

Students engaged in assisting asylum seekers in their claims for protection in ‘live client’ clinics are often required to undertake detailed and wide-ranging research regarding their clients’ claims. In order for students to competently undertake such research, they need to be familiar with legal research techniques and develop skills in accessing and applying relevant and authentic sources in order to support their clients’ claims. The migration clinic at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre, Australia, conducts casework for those seeking asylum and protection visas. In the Migration Clinic course, students’ research skills are developed so they can make an assessment as to whether a potential source is authentic and reliable or otherwise and to consider its relevance to a claim for asylum. This chapter explores the development of these student research skills and techniques as specific learning outcomes in a ‘live client’ migration clinic course.
