ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on oral interpreter-mediated communication with children in healthcare settings from the perspectives of both practice and research. It provides an literature review of the research related to interpreter-mediated communication with children with a focus on methodology. The studies mentioned below are located within healthcare, but nevertheless provide valuable knowledge about interpreter-mediated communication with children in general, including within healthcare settings. Therefore, similar concerns about the interpreter's lack of competence would be valid for interpreter-mediated communication with children in healthcare settings. When these children are offered healthcare, their interpreters in healthcare settings will have to undergo similar training in dealing with sensitive situations. Although most of an interpreter’s assignments in healthcare settings will involve interpreting between adults, interpreting for children is also a common occurrence. Studies coming from areas unrelated to health services nevertheless can provide invaluable knowledge and information about interpreter-mediated communication with children in healthcare.
