ABSTRACT
The chapter focuses on translation and interpreting in maternal and neonatal health, particularly from a feminist perspective to translation and women’s health. First, issues arising from linguistic and cultural incongruences in perinatal care are discussed, with a focus on possible solutions, including more widespread, careful and efficient use of interpreting within maternity services. The chapter then underscores the importance of translating childbirth narratives across languages and cultures, with a view to expanding the birthing choices available to prospective parents. The third section focuses on various translation projects undertaken to educate parents and birth professionals, and to challenge interventionists’ birth cultures. Future research areas are indicated in the concluding section.
