ABSTRACT

In a global environment where Teacher Education continues to be under intense scrutiny, there have been significant calls for alternative approaches to Initial Teacher Education (ITE). This chapter positions year-long teacher internships as one sample model to improve both the work and classroom readiness of secondary English pre-service teachers and in so doing addresses some of those critical Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group (TEMAG) recommendations. Some of the data from the research conducted with English interns as a single subject representation of the broader Murdoch Internship Models internships offered in Western Australian schools developed in response to TEMAG recommendations. The TEMAG Report continues this historical lineage by targeting the selection, accreditation, assessment and practicum components of ITE programs with a focus on research and workforce planning. Partner schools have attempted to provide as much opportunity for their interns to gain additional information and skills during the time in their schools.
