ABSTRACT

The information revolution entails a massive increase in available open-source material. The transformation of OSINT is amplified by the advent of the new field of social media intelligence, SOCMINT. This paradigm shift of information opens up a range of opportunities for intelligence analysis. However, it also necessitates a methodological shift from the traditional intelligence issues of dealing with information scarcity, to one of saliently performing intelligence analysis under conditions of information excess. For this purpose, there is a continuous development of software tools to help harness the information flows in ways that can best complement and augment the skills of the analyst - whose methodological and cultural skills will still be at the heart of the intelligence analysis process.
