ABSTRACT

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has become the official opposition, and in 2013 another party was formed, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which performed impressively in the elections a year later. Media diversity is understood as the existence of the greatest possible multiplicity of viewpoints in the media, and includes diversity on all levels of media production and consumption, achieving a diversity of opinions, languages, styles, genres and formats, as well as a diversity of voices, including the voices of those who are often marginalized by commercial media, such as workers, the unemployed, youth, women, and aged. The recommendations affirmed the discussion document and added new issues to the party’s agenda. The conference emphasised that broadcasting should take place in all the official languages, local content quotas should be increased to 60% for the public broadcaster, and the government should fund public service programming.
