ABSTRACT
The rule-based method had been dominant in machine translation research for several decades, and it is still functioning in present-day MT systems. Despite its difficulties and problems, this method is gaining new momentum, as the significance of linguistic research has been realized more than ever and the formalization of linguistic knowledge is growing and maturing.
