ABSTRACT
While the history of translation technology development has been highly international, there are certain unique features in the United States that differentiate it from its development elsewhere. These include the extensive investment by the US military, the wide gulf between machine translation researchers and human translators, and the extensive involvement of religious groups in the development and use of translation technology.
