ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a history of machine translation from the pioneering research and the early operational systems (1950s and 1960s) to the dominance of rule-based systems (1967 to 1989) and finally to the emergence of corpus-based systems (in particular statistical approaches), translation memories, evaluation methods, and current applications.
