ABSTRACT
After defining free/open-source (FOS) software and licensing, implications for machine translation (MT) as data-intensive software are reviewed. The types of FOS MT systems and users and their use in business and research are reviewed. Existing FOS MT systems are surveyed and the challenges ahead for FOS MT are described.
