ABSTRACT

Guided simulations are cine-VR experiences developed by the GRID lab where a viewer is “guided” through a simulation via text prompts. These prompts help create the perception of being part of a conversation instead of idly viewing a conversation. Once recorded, the same simulation could benefit countless trainees at any hour of the day or night. Given the training's scalability, the theorized that Guided Simulations could be used to accommodate a variety of challenging topics or patients. Early indicators suggest that viewing guided simulations in a headset is more likely to produce the desired results than via other methods (i.e., handheld device or flatscreen monitor) because distractions are minimized, and engagement is maximized. This will come as no surprise to those who have read studies that show that students who take notes during lectures are more likely to retain the information. Once the “perfect scene” has been captured with Guided Simulations, it is consistently repeatable any number of times.
