ABSTRACT

The Giving Voice to Values (GVV) framework established by Dr. Mary C. Gentile is most often utilized in educational settings with business students. GVV holds tremendous promise for the legal industry. Too often a lawyer’s singular focus on the confines of the law obscures the purpose and ethical implications behind such laws. After a brief overview of the GVV framework, this chapter examines the traditional approach lawyers adopt when providing legal advice and resolving internal challenges. The four main GVV strategies are: reframing, bridging the gap, building coalitions, and listening. By integrating the GVV framework into their legal toolkit, the next generation of lawyers can better advise clients and address organizational issues in a comprehensive, practical, and ethical manner. Incorporating a GVV approach into legal analyses could provide a new way forward for the legal industry and bolster credibility and trust.
