ABSTRACT

This chapter is an introduction to the book. In presenting aims and objectives of the work, it tracks its theoretical roots and, at the same time, it introduces both the 3M Model and the Theory of Social Organizing. While the work presented in this book is rooted in the distributed cognition literature, it diverges significantly from it by emphasizing the so-called ‘meso’ domain—a convergence of macro and micro elements that allow organizational social activities to emerge. In so doing, our approach emphasizes the importance of social elements to the framing of cognitive activities. This presents a view that talks, on the one hand, to cognitive scientists and, on the other hand, to management scholars interested in cognition. The chapter also presents a short summary of the contents of the book.
