ABSTRACT

Prisons with their closed spaces, inadequate healthcare and insufficient resources have fallen prey to coronavirus outbreaks across the world. The pandemic has raised questions on state responsibility to prevent the spread of the virus in prisons, and focused much-needed attention to issues surrounding prisons and prisoners’ rights. This chapter presents an insight into prisons in India, and the response of the judiciary, government and other stakeholders to mitigate the spread of the virus in prisons. It also provides an articulation of priority areas for consideration in future policy making and post-COVID-19 recovery plans.
