ABSTRACT

The two prison systems on the island of Ireland 2 have experienced relative success in their efforts to protect prisons from SARS-CoV-2. In this chapter, we provide an examination of the response to COVID-19, 3 north and south, to highlight measures implemented to stifle the spread of the virus, and also note the impact these preventive measures have on the prison population. For clarity, the bulk of the paper will focus on developments in the larger of these two jurisdictions, the Republic of Ireland (the South), with a shorter section addressing developments in the Northern Ireland Prison Service at the end of the chapter.
