ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the Canadian correctional systems, how these systems have managed the COVID-19 pandemic, and what public discussions about correctional systems have been sparked as a consequence of the pandemic. In Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented itself as a unique opportunity to discuss prison reform and push decarceration efforts. In addition to providing information on COVID-19 cases and correctional responses, the chapter also provides insights into the findings of a longitudinal study with loved ones of incarcerated persons and how they have experienced the management of COVID-19 in Canadian correctional institutions.
