ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the most relevant events in the Chilean prison environment after the arrival of COVID-19, together with data on infections, deaths and vaccination. First, it shows the state of Chilean prisons prior to the pandemic, considering academic studies and specialised institutions in the field. Then, it indicates the measures adopted for the prevention and treatment of cases, the measures to decongest prisons and reduce overcrowding, and the modification of visiting and communication regimes with the outside world. Finally, some conclusions are presented on the management of the pandemic and the impact it could have on Chilean prison policy.
