ABSTRACT

The author focuses on his struggle to find his true calling in life. He has long felt a pull between arts and science, perceiving these two areas to be mutually exclusive, yet needing to integrate them within himself to feel whole. He articulates many of the prototypical experiences associated with growing up gay, heavily marked by his unconventional upbringing, his inability to find like-minded peers, and his quest for a career that would bring him true happiness. Throughout the chapter, Miguel shares what it was like growing up as a gay man in Argentina, as well as his experiences as an international, nontraditional, queer engineering student in America, and the difficulties of navigating and inserting oneself in the traditionally underrepresented and conservative fields of engineering and aeronautics.
