ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the role that easily accessible technology has freed many to explore their artistic-self and share these artistic expressions in online forums that allow for social engagement, interaction, and public expressionism whilst in socially isolated circumstances. The research draws on data from social media and from those who engage in photography forums online to discuss the impact the technology development and access have played in driving artistry and, occasionally, the backlash from “purists” who feel technological advancements are degrading the medium. We explore the tension that these interactions online play, especially where social isolation is prevalent, as people explore new means of self-expression through their technology but have, in the minds of some photography forum members, little artistic or technical ability. This leads us to ask the questions: What is art and who is the judge of artistry and what is the role that an easily accessible form of art, such as digital photography, plays as a means of self-expression when access to other artistic materials is not readily available? We provide not only contributions to our understanding of self-expression and self-examination through art, but also the role that a wider community plays in developing or hampering one's artistic expression in a public online forum. Our work contributes to the role that enabling technologies can release artistic expression but, may not necessarily enhance artistry.
