ABSTRACT

This chapter explores why the FoCs are essential learning for students with SEND; the impact upon children and young people who find learning difficult and how they can be supported by an Intensive Interaction approach. From the child's point of view, forming relationships, learning to be with another person, sharing space and enjoying their company is the most important learning they will ever do and can truly be described as a universal human right. Communication informs, underpins, and gives access to all other aspects of learning and the curriculum. There seems to be some confusion about which students need Intensive Interaction in their curriculum and on their EHC Plans. Intensive Interaction is unique among other school-based approaches to developing communication. Intensive Interaction offers opportunities for learning about complex social communication skills, such as non-verbal communication, physical contacts, and facial expressions in a safe and enjoyable situation.
