ABSTRACT

This chapter is a reflection upon how the author went about implementing this strategy to develop a whole-school approach to using Intensive Interaction to promote social communication and well-being. Regardless of age or cognitive ability, the author have found that Intensive Interaction remains essential learning for all our students as it develops social communication and emotional well-being through non-pressurised, enjoyable, error-free learning. However, as stated earlier, because Intensive Interaction supports communication, social communication, and additionally helps with developing emotional regulation, it remains essential learning for all children with autism regardless of their age or verbal abilities. Staff also began to see the essential links between social communication and emotional well-being. Some anxiety-related behaviours that hadn’t been seen for a while began to re-emerge, and the author seemed a bit lost and unhappy.
