ABSTRACT

Pedagogy grounded in a commitment to racial justice is one way of moving toward improved educational outcomes for students of Color. This chapter proposes re-envisioning secondary Spanish language instruction through the lens of critical race theory. It outlines CRT principles and their relevance to the secondary Spanish classroom, and this includes an examination of national standards. The chapter recommends actions and discussion questions that teachers and students may use to operationalize CRT principles. The chapter draws from the author’s lived experiences as a Latina and veteran high school Spanish language teacher of Latinx students. The chapter’s examples and points of reference are related to Spanish and U.S. Latinx populations. However, the points made can be applied to other languages of instruction, and the chapter urges readers to make connections to other languages.
