ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the status of tribal agriculture in the country and how their occupation has culminated in aggravating further poverty and degeneration of resources in tribal pockets. It also explores ways of strengthening the agricultural resource base of the communities to assure sustainable livelihoods for the communities so that their future could be secured. The study provides a detailed descriptive outline of tribal agriculture analysing some of the critical mechanisms which has resulted in large-scale resource debilitation in tribal areas. The study concludes on a note that technology-intensive solutions (such as introduction of hybrid seeds or “improved” methods of farming) might not be sustainable measures if institutional constraints in tribal societies are not addressed simultaneously.
