ABSTRACT

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is an educational approach that could be placed under the broad umbrella of bilingual education. In this chapter, we explain that in the field of bilingual education there is a need for a volume that synthesises the concepts, research, and practice on CLIL around the world to gauge its impact and discuss its future directions. The chapter also provides a summary of the organisation of the handbook. We stress that the volume represents the wide range of views on CLIL, even if some of these may be at odds with mainstream discourses. The volume also represents a variety of contexts as well as voices.
