ABSTRACT

Given the expansion of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) programmes around the world, there is an urgent need for CLIL teacher professional development (PD) to keep up with the increasing demand for qualified teachers. In light of this scenario, this chapter aims to provide theoretical guidance and practical implications for CLIL teacher PD. This chapter first discusses the challenges encountered by teachers when implementing CLIL and summarises the essential knowledge base that CLIL teachers need. It is then followed by an updated review of existing CLIL PD programmes for both pre-service and in-service teachers. Empirical studies on CLIL teacher PD are synthesised to capture a comprehensive picture of the research in this direction. This chapter concludes with some useful models for CLIL teacher PD and future research directions.
