ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of self-regulation and positions this construct as a key mental performance competency that should be prioritized by Mental Performance Consultants (MPCs) to positively impact learning, performance, and mental health. Mental health represents a state of psychological, emotional, and social well-being leading individuals to enjoy life, cope with stress, work productively, realize their potential, and contribute to their community. An important construct at the heart of human functioning and performance is self-regulation. Self-awareness reflects the conscious knowledge that individuals have of their inner states and behaviors within a particular situation or context–it is thus essential for learning and performing. Self-awareness can be enhanced by multiple mental performance skills and strategies. One construct often linked to self-regulation and self-awareness is mindfulness. Self-awareness can be an outcome of self-regulation and mindfulness training. Self-regulation, self-awareness, and mindfulness are interrelated constructs that have been associated with favorable mental performance and mental health outcomes in sport.
